E. W. Bullinger was a man of enormous intelligence, integrity and initiative. An ordained pastor and biblical scholar, he was one of those rare individuals who didn't care what people thought of him. His just wanted to be faithful to the truth of God's Word.
Bullinger was born in England in 1837 during the Victorian Era. The Church was threatened with the emerging theory of Evolution, the rise of spiritualism and Higher Criticism's attack on the Bible. And Bullinger stood boldly against all three assaults. He also exposed the falsehoods of the Roman Catholic Church.
Listen to Him Teach!
Ethelbert W. Bullinger enrolled at King's College in London and graduated as a Greek and Hebrew scholar. He later earned the Doctor of Divinity degree.
Bullinger enjoyed music, puzzles, word games and poetry.
But Bullinger's greatest love was God's Word. His passion was to help Bible students everywhere develop a holy reverence for the Scriptures.
Audiences loved hearing Bullinger teach and defend the literal accuracy of God's Word. He showed them the weaknesses of the English translations and constantly challenged his students to search the Scriptures for themselves.
Helping You with The Greek
God revealed His words to the human race in the ancient Hebrew and Greek languages…
And Bullinger wanted to help fellow Christians gain a deeper understanding of the original New Testament Greek words. So he began designing a special concordance that even those unacquainted with the Greek texts could understand.
Showing You How To "Figure" It Out
As a student of God's "words," Bullinger found it necessary to study figures of speech.
You see, God's Word contains hundreds of figures of speech. Similes, metaphors, parables, allegories, questions, quotations and many other figures. The Bible uses these figures to mark that which God wants emphasized.
For example, God is spirit, not flesh. But he uses the figure of speech anthropopatheia to talk about his "eyes" and "ears." This emphasizes that God sees and hears us.
Bullinger realized the church needed a scientific and systematic study of the figures to help them study the Word. Even most translators and commentators do not understand these figures of speech, and this has resulted in gross errors and false doctrines in the churches.
So he began work on another book to help the church. Bullinger first transliterated the names of the figures of speech from Greek and Latin into English. Then he arranged the figures according to their three great principles of omission, addition and change.
In 1898 when Bullinger finally published his monumental work,
Do You See The Patterns?
God uses special figures of speech to "structure" or outline all the passages of Scripture!
The entire Bible is built around these amazing repeating "patterns," just like the concentric circles of a ripple in a pond!
For example, if an author talks about men, women, boys and girls and then immediately begins talking once again about men, women, boys and girls, we see there is a "repeating sequence" of the same thoughts.
God's repeating sequences in the Bible help us interpret the scriptures and resolve "difficult" passages, which are often explained in their repeated passage! For example, 1 Peter 3:19 does not identify who the "spirits in prison" really are. But the parallel passage in the repeated sequence (verse 22) reveals they are "angels."
There is no way the "ignorant and unlearned" authors of the Bible could have penned these amazingly intricate and mathematically perfect sequences in the Holy Scriptures. They had no computers! The structures prove the Bible really is God's Word! Is the Bible true? You bet!
Satan hates this information, and has buried it. Most Christians today know nothing about the Scriptures' internal structures, these "repeating patterns."
But…
What a super discovery!
In the early 1890s Bullinger blessed the Body of Christ
with two more important research tools...
Look Up! You Can See The Gospel!
God's Word is written in THE HEAVENS!
God set his Message to Mankind in the stars more than 2500 years before the Bible was ever written down. He did not leave mankind without a witness!
You see, when ancient man gazed up at the nighttime sky the brilliant star constellations from Virgo all the way across to Leo spoke to him. And they revealed God's plan of redemption!
Virgo prophesied of the virgin birth of Planet Earth's Messiah, and each successive constellation revealed another phase of God's plan. Finally, Leo told curious stargazers that the world's Redeemer would reign as a Lion...the Lion of the tribe of Judah!
(Isaiah 7:14; Revelation 5:5; Genesis 3:15).
God himself numbered and named the stars and
the Scriptures talk about the twelve signs of the zodiac
(Psalm 147:4; Job 38:31-32; 2 Kings 23:5).
God's Word is written in the HEAVENS!
The apostle Paul says "everyone" who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved because they have heard the message. How? He is quoting the first verses of Psalm 19, which says THE HEAVENS declare God's message to men! The last part of the Psalm speaks of God's Word written down in the law. So there are parallels between God's revelation in the Stars and Scripture!
(Romans 10:18, Psalm 19)
The Witness of The Stars is a significant piece of work and has inspired many other modern-day books on the subject. Thank you, E. W. Bullinger, for pointing us to God's Word and THE HEAVENS to hear God's message!
It All Adds Up...Your Bible is Perfect
In 1894 Christians were once again thrilled as they examined Bullinger's newest work, Number in Scripture.
Excited readers felt their hearts pounding as they witnessed God using numbers with purpose and absolute precision in his Word. Just as we see God's precise use of numbers in his works: in the fields of biology, physiology, chemistry, music, color, etc. Both God's way and his Word are perfect (Ps 18:30, Ps 19:7).
What a thrill for Christians to discover that each of the individual Scripture writers was moved by the holy spirit to produce a comprehensive and completed Bible that is mathematically perfect! A composite book so perfect that its words are used a specific and definite number of times—in correspondence with each words' significance!
For example: the number seven signifies perfection throughout the Bible. And God's perfect creation of the universe is described with exactly seven words in the Hebrew text! (Genesis 1:1) We find similar numerical correspondence throughout God's Word.
Another example. The number one signifies that something is "singularly significant." And so we discover that first occurrence of words in the Bible are always significant, that very important words occur only once and there is only one word for Truth!
Bullinger goes on to explain the significance of the rest of the numbers in Number in Scripture.
Readers must have been especially thrilled when they first saw Bullinger's three pages of documentation, from the Greek words, showing the numerical proof that Paul wrote the book of Hebrews!
This mathematical precision of God's Word is found throughout all of the Bible's books, writers, important words and phrases.
The Bible really is God's Word!
Beware: Religion at Work
Bullinger realized that people want Christ, not religion!
But the churches were starving God's hungry people, proof-texting their denominational doctrines and criticizing any believers who learned new things on their own.
Bullinger warned Christians to put on the armor of God because Satan's primary sphere of operation is RELIGION. Satan's first recorded words in Scripture are "Did God really say?" The devil gets us to question God's Word. So we must be alert for him in the seminaries, Bible colleges, pulpits, and sermons.
Today religious men inside the churches have failed to believe God, so He has called those outside the system to teach his Word. There has been an explosion of parachurch organizations, nondenominational churches, charismatic groups, etc.
Bullinger chastised the churches of his day for building themselves up around doctrines that are barely mentioned in the Scriptures. Two-thirds of the epistles do not even mention baptism, and the Lord's Supper is only mentioned in one epistle.
Your Help is On The Way
Christians were hungry to read and study the Bible accurately for themselves, so...
In 1907 E. W. Bullinger published his still-popular book,
Excited readers learned how to study God's Word for themselves, from the inside out. They learned how to study Bible verses in their contexts and to check out God's own usage of the words. God uses human words to perfection (Psalm 12:6).
What about the Bible's "difficult" verses? No human guesswork is allowed! Keep searching the Word, because somewhere in the Bible God himself explains the meaning of that difficult verse!
Bullinger illustrated this by showing the Bible's own explanation of Paul's "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7). He had his students check out God's own definition of a "thorn" in one's flesh, way back in Numbers 33:55 and Joshua 23:13. Those passages give the conclusive explanation of a "thorn in the flesh," right there in Scripture. No more guesswork!
This reinforces what Bullinger often told his audiences:
God's Word speaks more eloquently for itself than any man could ever speak on its behalf.

Take a Stand Against Error...
Bullinger wanted to encourage Bible reading believers to look for the return of Jesus Christ. So in 1894 he began publishing a monthly magazine, Things to Come.
The magazine was also a platform for him to speak out against the errors of his day.
Bullinger took a stand against the theory of Evolution, citing at least eight principles that proved it wrong.
Bullinger spoke out against the error of "immediate life after death," which leaves people open to the demonic movement of spiritualism. He pointed out that currently popular phrases such as "intermediate state" and the "Church Triumphant" are not in the Bible. The Scriptures say nothing about man's spirit or soul going to Purgatory or elsewhere. God's Word teaches that when a person dies their thoughts perish and their spirit returns TO GOD. (Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 12:7). Believers should not go beyond Scripture or contradict it with their traditions.
Bullinger also spoke out against the Roman Catholic Church's corruption of the Scriptures. Their Bible translation implies that Mary, not Christ will "bruise the serpent's head." They also changed the word repentance to "do penance" (Genesis 3:15, Matthew 3:2). Bullinger noticed that as Church authority increases the Word of God diminishes.
A Special Bible For You
As Bullinger grew older his friends urged him to compile his life's work into a very special Bible for his readers.
So in 1907 with the help of two assistants he began working on the Old Testament portion of the Bible. Bullinger died before the project was finished, but the project leaders continued to work and compile his notes and in 1922 they published The Companion Bible.
The Companion Bible gives you access to all of Bullinger's notes on the original wording of the Hebrew and Greek of the verses. They are displayed parallel with the King James Version of the text.
The back of The Companion Bible gives you access to a systematic summary of all of Bullinger's lifetime research. There are 198 appendices which present word studies, notes on the critical Greek texts, chronologies and archaeological discoveries. You will also find sections on figures of speech, Eastern customs and an explanation of the significance of numbers as used in the Scriptures.
As if that were not enough, The Companion Bible also includes notes on the Massorah and gives you an extensive cover-to-cover analysis of the Bible's internal "Structures."
What a blessing for you and the entire Christian world, this
"Companion Bible!"
What Bullinger Left For You...
E. W. Bullinger's lifetime study of God's Word was an outstanding success. He didn't care what men thought about the Scriptures. He carefully analyzed God's original words and allowed the Scriptures to interpret themselves.
Bullinger was not perfect, but the massive works he produced stand head and shoulders above most other books about the Bible. Why? Because he studied the original languages, demanded accuracy in his work and allowed the Scriptures to interpret themselves.
Bullinger's work laid the foundation so you can study the accuracy of God's Word. We will be teaching you many of the same biblical research principles in our DVD series, Super Heart Living. Our first DVD is already available here...
