”Those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ… so through the obedience of the one will many be made righteous.” (Romans 5:17)
You as a follower of Christ are a righteous person. Yes, you!
God says so. He gave you the “gift” of righteousness and made you righteous.
God declares you are now okay…you are forgiven, cleansed and in a positive relationship with him…he made you righteous. So when you ask yourself "who am I in Christ," you can answer I am a righteous person!
But to enjoy your righteousness…
You Must Love Yourself
Self-esteem is vital! Here’s why:
- Your self-image governs your actions. “For as he thinks in his heart, so he is.” (Proverbs 23:7)
- Loving yourself gives you the courage to “draw near with boldness to the throne of grace.” (Hebrews 4:16)
- Your self-image protects you...righteousness is your armor “breastplate” (Ephesians 6:14)
So knowing who you are in Christ and loving yourself is the foundation of Super Heart Living!
But you are probably wondering...
Does God Want You to Love Yourself?
Let’s see…
Jesus says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)
Jesus says you are to love our neighbor as you love yourself. Now, if you don’t love yourself, are you going to love your neighbor? No!
So loving yourself is the basis for loving others. That’s what our Lord Jesus Christ says. And you are following him, right?
Now notice what Jesus Christ says about himself…
“I am the light of the world…no one comes to the Father except by me!” (John 8:12; 14:6)
Does that sound like poor self-esteem? Not in my book. And remember, you are supposed to follow Jesus Christ’s example, even in this matter of self esteem. You are to follow him.
Jesus loves himself! And you are supposed to love yourself also.
Now let’s really get down to basics…
Does God love himself…does He have positive self-esteem? Does God believe in himself?
The Bible says God is love and he commands us to “imitate” his love walk…to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…" (Matthew 22:37).
So you “imitate” God by not only loving others but also loving him with all our hearts (Ephesians 5:1; Mark 12:30-31).
So obviously God must love himself, right?
Think about that. Come on, now, let’s get real. Cast aside any religious nonsense you may have heard about this subject and just listen to God’s Word for a minute. God says you are to imitate him and he commands you to love him with all your heart.
So God must love himself, right? Of course. God is love. He loves everybody, including himself!
So, see how all of this works?
* God loves himself and everybody else…
* Jesus Christ loves himself and everybody else.
* You are to love yourself and everybody else (Mark 12:31).
This issue of loving yourself is really simple, isn’t it? Well, then…
Why Do Some Preachers Say
It is A SIN For You To Love Yourself?
Because many ministers preach “sin and condemnation” instead of your righteousness in Christ. Shame on them. When you ask them "Who am I in Christ" they answer "You are a 'saved sinner.'" Notice...
Negative preachers call you a “saved sinner,” not realizing that…
The term “saved sinner” is not in the Bible! (Check your Bible concordance) Nowhere does God call you a saved sinner.
Yes, you were a sinner… but when you get saved God says you are a new creation in Christ! (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15).
You are a new creation.
God no longer calls you a “sinner,” saved or otherwise!
Now, of course you will still sin, because none of us is perfect. But because of the new birth God now "sees you" as a righteous person, having “the righteousness which is from God by faith.” (Philippians 3:9)
So, if you are now a “righteous” person and a new creation in Christ, just exactly…
Who are you really?
Before we answer that question, we must first clear up a misunderstanding. You must first realize…
Who You Are Not
You are not who people say you are.
You are whom God says you are. God is your creator and He is the one who knows your true identity. Right?
But when you ask "Who am I in Christ" and religious leaders tell you "You are a Baptist" or "You are a Presbyterian"...
My friend, that is not who you are. You are not any of those things. None of those religious labels are in the Bible!
In fact, religious denominations are forbidden divisions in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 3:4-11).
If you are not a denominational person, then…
Who Are You—Really?
Grab your Bible, open it to Galatians 3:26 and take a deep breath. You are about to discover your true identity...
“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
You are a son of God!
You just discovered your true identity! You are a “son” of God Almighty. Stop…catch your breath…let that sink in.
According to God…
You are not a Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Baptist or whatever. No, God never says that about you. That’s not who you really are.
Your Creator says you are a son of God.
So when you ask "Who am I in Christ" God himself tells you "You are one of my sons!" You really begin to discover the meaning of life when you learn your true idenity: you are a son of God!
God is your Father, you are his son. Now you can really begin to live!
Whether you are male or female, God calls you his “son.” We discuss this in depth in our first Super Heart Living DVD, The Self-Esteem of Sonship.
But for now you must understand the important connection between…
The Armor of God and Self-Esteem
Listen up. Your righteousness is part of your spiritual armor.
Why? Because…
The devil will condemn you every time you make a mistake. He is the accuser of our brothers (Revelation12:10). The prince of the “air power” (Ephesians 2:2) messes with your brain waves, sending negative thoughts into your mind so you feel condemned.
Your enemy, the devil, puts you down. Why?
Satan fears your walk with God.
And he will succeed at condemning you unless you “armorize” your heart with a knowledge of your righteousness.
So put on the righteousness “breastplate” so you can stand against the enemy (Ephesians 6:14). Your right-standing with God as a son of God is part of your spiritual armor.
You must learn your rights and privileges as a son of God.
